Community breathwork for BIPOC and Queer healing

Breathwork for the BIPOC, Queer, and Neurospicy Soul: Why We Need It Now

September 03, 20253 min read

Let’s start with the truth…

When the world sees you as “too much” or “not enough,” you start to carry it — not just in your mind, but in your body.
Your breath gets shallow.
Your shoulders creep up toward your ears.
You find yourself tired for no reason… or wired when you’re supposed to rest.

For BIPOC, Queer, and Neurospicy folks, this isn’t random stress — it’s the daily toll of navigating systems that weren’t built for us.
And it’s why breathwork is more than a wellness trend.
It’s a reclamation.

Why Breath is Political (and Spiritual)

Every time you take a deep, intentional breath, you’re telling your nervous system:

“I choose life on my terms.”

For communities whose histories are woven with survival, resistance, and resilience, reclaiming our breath is reclaiming our right to exist fully, not just function.

Science backs this up:

  • Slow breathing lowers cortisol, reducing chronic stress.

  • Rhythmic breathing activates the vagus nerve, promoting calm and emotional regulation.

  • Deep oxygenation improves brain function, focus, and mood — essential for creativity and advocacy.

Spiritually, breath is prana or life force energy. The more we can move it freely through our bodies, the more we align with our truth.

The Layers of Stress We Carry

1. Hypervigilance

Many of us have been conditioned to “read the room” before we even enter it.
Breathwork interrupts this constant scanning and grounds us in the now.

2. Internalized Pressure

That quiet voice that says, “You have to prove yourself to be accepted.”
Breath slows the spiral and lets you respond instead of react.

3. Sensory Overload (for my Neurospicy fam)

Breath patterns like Box Breathing and Alternate Nostril can calm the sensory nervous system and make overwhelming environments more manageable.

Three Practices to Try Right Now

1. The Grounding Breath (Safe Space in 60 Seconds)

  • Inhale through the nose for 4 counts

  • Exhale through the mouth for 6 counts

  • Visualize roots growing from your feet into the earth

2. Shakti Shaking + Breath (Release Built-Up Tension)

  • Stand with knees soft

  • Shake your body while breathing in through the nose, out through the mouth

  • Continue for 1–2 minutes, then pause, close your eyes, and notice the stillness

3. Heart-Opening Breath (For Connection & Softness)

  • Inhale deeply, expanding your chest

  • Exhale with a sigh, dropping your shoulders

  • Repeat for 2 minutes, focusing on softening your chest and jaw

Why This Work Is Urgent

We are the leaders of the New Earth... but we can’t hold the vision if we’re running on fumes.
Breathwork gives us the energy, presence, and clarity to lead without burning out.

When we breathe deeply, we remind ourselves and our communities:
We are worthy of rest.
We are worthy of joy.
We are worthy of the space we take up.
