The Confidence Leak: Why You Feel Powerful One Day and Doubt Yourself the Next

March 11, 20263 min read

The Rollercoaster Nobody Talks About

Some mornings you wake up feeling unstoppable.
The mirror loves you.
Your to-do list? Conquerable.
Your inner pep talk? Beyoncé-level.

And then… the very next day?
You’re questioning every decision you’ve ever made, overthinking texts you sent two weeks ago, and suddenly your “big vision” feels like a big ol’ question mark.

It’s not that you lost your power — it’s that you sprung a confidence leak.

The Hidden Biology Behind Confidence Fluctuations

We love to treat confidence like it’s purely mental, but there’s a very real chemical side to it.
Your brain runs on a cocktail of four “feel good” neurochemicals — I call them your DOSE:

  • Dopamine – motivation, reward, momentum

  • Oxytocin – connection, trust, belonging

  • Serotonin – mood stability, grounded self-worth

  • Endorphins – natural pain relief, joy bursts

When these chemicals are in flow, you feel confident. When they dip? You start outsourcing your self-worth to Instagram likes, other people’s approval, or whatever validation you can grab.

Why External Validation Feels So Addictive

Here’s the kicker: many of us unknowingly train our DOSE system to rely on outside triggers.

Example:

  • You post something → get likes → dopamine boost

  • Friend says you look great → oxytocin spike

  • Boss praises you → serotonin bump

The problem? Those triggers aren’t guaranteed. Which means your confidence rides shotgun to circumstances you don’t control.

How to Stop the Leak: Internal DOSE Activation

You can literally rewire your brain to produce these chemicals from the inside out.
Here’s how:

  1. Dopamine: Celebrate Micro Wins

    • Start your day with a tiny, winnable task (like making your bed or 3 minutes of breathwork).

    • Each success creates a dopamine drip — momentum builds confidence.

  2. Oxytocin: Conscious Connection

    • Send a voice note of genuine appreciation to a friend.

    • Physical touch with a loved one or even self-hugging can spike oxytocin.

  3. Serotonin: Get Sun + Gratitude

    • Morning sunlight triggers serotonin production.

    • Pair it with a gratitude list to anchor in contentment.

  4. Endorphins: Move Your Body

    • Dance, walk, or stretch — anything that gets you breathing deeper and blood flowing.

    • Bonus: laughter releases endorphins too. Watch something silly!

The 5-Minute Daily Confidence Ritual

This is my go-to for keeping my own confidence steady, especially before speaking gigs, client calls, or creative work:

  1. One Minute – Gentle SOMA-style rhythmic breathing (in for 4, out for 4)

  2. One Minute – Shake your body loose (yes, like you’re at a kitchen dance party)

  3. One Minute – List 3 wins from the past 24 hours (no matter how small)

  4. One Minute – Send one loving message to someone in your life

  5. One Minute – Step outside and let sunlight hit your face

Five minutes. Four neurochemicals. A whole new energy.

Why This Works Long-Term

When you learn to activate DOSE from within, your confidence stops being a fair-weather friend.
Instead of waiting for life to hand you permission to feel powerful, you become your own source.

And that? That’s unshakable.
